Receipts & extraction
What we read from a receipt, what we cannot, and how to fix mistakes.
Extraction reads printed receipts well, handwritten ones poorly, and anything blurred or cropped not at all. Review before saving.
What is extracted
| Field | Reliability | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Amount | High | Verify when a receipt shows several totals (subtotal, tip, tax). |
| Date | High | Ambiguous DD/MM vs MM/DD formats are the usual failure. |
| Vendor | Medium | Franchise and marketplace names may differ from the trading name. |
| Tax / GST | Medium | Only when itemised on the receipt. |
| Category | Suggested | Inferred from the vendor. Always editable. |
Supported files
JPEG, PNG, HEIC and PDF. Files are validated by their actual content, not their extension — renaming a file to .pdf will not get it accepted.
If extraction is wrong
Edit the field and save. The correction applies to that expense only. If a specific vendor is consistently misread, report it — see Report a problem — and include the vendor name, because we can improve handling for that pattern.
